The Core FIRE Formula
Financial independence occurs when your investment portfolio can sustainably fund your annual expenses. The most common target: a portfolio worth 25 times annual expenses, based on the "4% rule" suggesting you can withdraw 4% annually with high probability of not running out of money over a 30-year retirement.
If you spend $40,000 annually, you need $1 million for traditional FIRE (40,000 × 25 = 1,000,000). If you spend $80,000, you need $2 million. The relationship is direct: lower expenses mean lower targets; higher expenses require more accumulation.
The calculator takes your current portfolio value, annual savings, expected returns, and annual expenses to project when your portfolio crosses the financial independence threshold. It might reveal you're 12 years from FI at your current pace—or 8 years if you increase savings by $10,000 annually.
Savings Rate: The Primary Variable
Investment returns matter, but you can't control them. Savings rate—the percentage of income you save—remains within your power, making it the primary lever for accelerating FIRE.
The mathematics are compelling. At a 10% savings rate, you need roughly 51 years to achieve financial independence (assuming you start from zero and maintain consistent saving). At 25%, about 32 years. At 50%, approximately 17 years. At 70%, just 8-9 years.
This relationship exists because higher savings rates simultaneously increase how fast your portfolio grows and decrease how much portfolio you need. Someone saving 70% of their income has proven they can live on 30%, meaning their required FI portfolio is much smaller than someone living on 90% of income.
Types of FIRE
The community has developed variations reflecting different lifestyle goals and risk tolerances.
Fat FIRE targets a comfortable lifestyle in retirement—perhaps $80,000+ in annual spending. This approach requires larger portfolios but doesn't demand spartan living.
Lean FIRE embraces minimalism, targeting perhaps $30,000-$40,000 in annual spending. Smaller portfolios suffice, enabling earlier independence, but lifestyle choices are constrained.
Barista FIRE or Coast FIRE involves partial retirement, where accumulated savings grow toward eventual full retirement while part-time work covers current expenses. This approach reaches independence earlier but maintains some work indefinitely.

The 4% Rule Explained
The 4% withdrawal rate emerged from the Trinity Study, which analyzed historical market data to determine sustainable withdrawal rates over 30-year periods. At 4% withdrawal, historically, portfolios survived 30 years in most scenarios.
Critics note that future returns may differ from historical averages, that 30 years may not cover early retirees' longer retirements, and that the study used US data which may not apply globally. More conservative FIRE planners use 3.5% or 3% withdrawal rates, requiring larger portfolios but providing more margin.
The calculator typically defaults to the 4% rule (25× expenses) but should allow adjustment. Entering a 3.5% withdrawal rate increases the required portfolio, delaying your projected FI date but providing more security.
Income vs. Expense Optimization
Two paths lead to higher savings rates: increasing income while maintaining expenses, or decreasing expenses while income stays constant. FIRE practitioners often combine both approaches.
Income optimization includes career advancement, skill development, side businesses, and passive income building. These strategies increase savings without requiring lifestyle sacrifice—you simply save the incremental income.
Expense optimization involves intentional spending reduction: smaller housing, older cars, home-cooked meals, eliminated subscriptions. Geographic arbitrage—moving to lower cost-of-living areas—dramatically reduces expenses for location-flexible workers.

Investment Allocation Considerations
During accumulation, most FIRE portfolios emphasize stocks for their historically superior long-term returns. A 90/10 or 80/20 stock/bond allocation maximizes expected growth during the years when you're not withdrawing.
The calculator assumes consistent returns, but actual markets fluctuate dramatically. A market decline early in FIRE can devastate a portfolio through "sequence of returns risk"—withdrawing during down markets depletes shares that can't participate in eventual recovery.
Many FIRE practitioners build bond tents (increased bond allocation around retirement date) or maintain cash reserves covering 1-3 years of expenses to avoid selling stocks during downturns.
The Reality of Early Retirement
Projections assume consistent behavior over many years—consistent savings rates, consistent returns, consistent expenses. Reality is messier. Careers stall, opportunities arise, expenses spike for health or family reasons, markets crash and surge.

Some who achieve FIRE find themselves bored or purposeless without work's structure. Others discover passions impossible while employed full-time. Many continue working in changed capacity—reduced hours, different fields, or self-employment.
Healthcare represents a practical concern for early retirees. Before Medicare eligibility at 65, health insurance requires either expensive individual policies, ACA marketplace plans, or employment that provides coverage. This cost should factor into expense projections.
Social Security planning also matters. Early retirees might delay claiming to maximize benefits, requiring portfolios to bridge until optimal claiming age.
Running Your Projections
Enter your current investment portfolio value, annual savings contribution, expected investment return (be conservative—6-7% real returns is reasonable), and annual living expenses.
