Finally, assess behavioral factors. Will you actually stop using credit cards? Will you maintain payment discipline throughout the loan term? Honest self-assessment matters more than spreadsheet projections.

Alternatives to Consolidation

The debt avalanche or snowball methods may work better than consolidation. These strategies attack debts strategically without new borrowing, fees, or credit inquiries. If your main issue is motivation or organization, a payoff strategy might accomplish more than consolidation.

Negotiating with current creditors sometimes yields rate reductions without new loans. Credit card companies may lower your rate if you call and ask, especially if you mention considering balance transfers.

Credit counseling agencies can negotiate lower rates and consolidated payments through debt management plans without taking out new loans. These plans don't require qualifying for new credit and can work when consolidation loans are unavailable.
